Suspected asylum-seeker boat arrives

A boat carrying an estimated 50 suspected asylum seekers has arrived in Australian waters.

The customs vessel Triton intercepted the boat south-southeast of Ashmore Islands on Friday night, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said in a statement.

Initial indications suggested there were 50 passengers and two crew on board.

Border Protection Command will arrange for the passengers to be transferred to Christmas Island for security, health and identity checks.
