‘Syria democratic reforms need chance’

In a Wednesday meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Tehran, Jalili stressed Syria should be granted the opportunity to instigate democratic reforms in the country. He also underlined the importance of correcting defects of the peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan on Syria.

The peace plan, effective from mid-April, calls for the establishment of a cease-fire between the government and the opposition, allowing humanitarian groups to access the population, releasing detainees and starting a political dialogue.

The SNSC secretary said a Russian proposal for convening an international conference on Syria would play a positive role in tightening regional security, countering terrorist bids and putting an end to foreign interference in the Arab country.

It is necessary to control Syria’s border to prevent the transfer of arms to the country, Jalili emphasized.

Lavrov, for his part, said Iran plays an “effective and key” role in the region and added that all influential countries, particularly Iran, should participate in the conference on Syria to find a solution to the ongoing crisis in the country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
