Syria reiterates support for Annan’s plan

The announcement was made in a letter addressed to a Thursday meeting in New Delhi of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

The Syrian president demanded, however, that the armed groups fighting the government give assurances to end “terrorist acts” and that foreign countries stop backing them.

“President Assad… has informed Annan that Syria approves the plan submitted [by Annan] but had made remarks about it,” the letter read.

Annan’s six-point plan calls, inter alia, for an end to violence in Syria, a two-hour humanitarian ceasefire every day, media access to the troubled spots, and political dialogue between the government and the opposition.

Meanwhile, leaders at an Arab League summit in Baghdad also expressed support for Annan’s plan for restoring peace in Syria.

The participants said they favored a political solution to the unrest in Syria through national dialogue, and supported talks between the Syrian government and opposition based on Annan’s peace plan.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011 and many people, including security forces, have lost their lives in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, stating that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
