Syria security chief denies defection

“The unity of Syrian Armed Forces has outraged the domestic and foreign enemies, prompting them to release false reports about the defection of Syrian officers from the military,” he said in an interview with Syria’s al-Dunya TV channel on Monday.

The general made the remarks after reports in the Arab media alleged that he had defected from the Army and claimed that Syrian security forces had attacked his family and relatives.

Ghazala added that some media outlets assume that such false reports and news would boost the morale of the traitors working within them, but the Syrian Army is stronger than all the conspiracies and false propaganda of the enemies.

“The publication of the biased report indicates the bankruptcy of Arab networks,” he maintained.

“I have been serving as a solider of the Syrian Army for 40 years and I am still faithful to the head of the country’s military, Bashar al-Assad.”

Earlier on Monday, Saudi-owned television news network Al Arabiya reported falsely that Ghazala had defected from the Army and fled to Jordan along with his family.

The network further reported that the Syrian security forces had stormed Ghazala’s residence in the village of Kirfa in the Deraa province in southwestern Syria, setting fire to his cars.

In reports which have likewise been proven baseless, Al Arabiya, Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera, and the Reuters news agency had also claimed that seven Syrian Air Force pilots had fled to Jordan.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, including many security forces.

Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the violence, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

The West and the Syrian opposition, however, accuse the government of killing protesters.
