Hybrid Milestone
Toyota has sold a lot of hybrids around the world. A lot. As of the end of last month, they have cumulatively sold about 5.125 million hybrids worldwide, with almost 2 million (1,951,243 to be precise) sold in the United States. Not surprisingly, the Prius is the rockstar, with 2.9 million units sold, followed by the Prius C (409k units, which is impressive because it hasn’t been around for long) and the Camry hybrid (357k units). The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota’s only plug-in hybrid model, has sold 32.7k units.

Toyota estimates that its global fleet of nearly 20 hybrid vehicles has resulted in approximately 34 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions than those emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles, saving more than 3 billion gallons of gasoline compared to gasoline-only powered vehicles. It’s not clear how they reached those numbers, though, so take it with a grain of salt.
What’s most impressive is the popularity of the Prius family in Japan. This doesn’t apply to the Camry hybrid (probably a bit too big for Japan):

As I always say, it’s better for the environment to walk, bike, or take transit. But if you have to drive, get the most fuel efficient and cleanest vehicle that meets your needs. Most hybrids are certainly an improvement over gas-only cars when it comes to CO2 and smog-forming emissions, though plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars are an even bigger improvement.
