Tassie forest negotiators close to deal

Forest peace negotiators in Tasmania, who say they are close to a deal, have been granted an extra two weeks to have a single scenario “modelled”.

Representatives of the forestry industry and environmentalists had been given until Monday to reach an agreement to end the state’s bitter 30-year “forest war” over how its forestry industry should operate.

Premier Lara Giddings had previously ruled out another extension, after granting one when it was clear no deal would be done by June 30.

But she was adamant too much was at stake with the groups seemingly close to a breakthrough.

“This has been a 30-year conflict and I am not prepared to sacrifice the potential for a resolution for the sake of a two-week deadline,” she said.

In return, negotiators told her they were optimistic a deal could be reached if a scenario could be modelled by Forestry Tasmania and members of an independent panel that produced an earlier report on Tasmania’s forests.

“We haven’t yet reached a finalised agreement and we won’t do so until we get the modelling … so that we can prove up the issues we’ve been discussing and to ensure that we’re not going to cause unintended consequences,” Forestry Industries Association of Tasmania negotiator Terry Edwards told reporters.

Mr Edwards said forestry resources, socio-economic impacts and government funding would be among the issues to be examined.

Wilderness Society representative Vica Bayley added, “The modelling looks at wood supply that can be delivered from a specific reserve scenario.”

A precarious two weeks is now in store for the state, which could be on the brink of an historic agreement to restructure the timber industry and end the bitter clashes that have been part of Tasmanian life since the 1980s.

Both the industry groups and environmentalists are optimistic they can satisfy most stakeholders.

“We believe that what is being modelled does present an opportunity to deliver a solution for everybody’s aspirations out of this process,” Mr Bayley said.
