Taxi driver quizzed over fatal accident

Detectives are interviewing a taxi driver who is suspected of being involved in the death of Sydney man Andrew Heffernan.

Mr Heffernan died after being hit by a vehicle outside the Castle Towers shopping centre in Castle Hill, in the city’s northwest about 1am (AEST) on Saturday.

The 23-year-old, from nearby Glenhaven, was on his way home from a night out with mates when the hit-and-run accident occurred.

On Sunday police seized and examined a taxi believed to have been involved.

Its 39-year-old owner spoke briefly and informally with detectives on Sunday and on Monday night he was being formally interviewed at a Sydney police station.

A police spokesman said it was too early to say if any charges would be laid.

Detectives hoped to have results from the forensic examination of the man’s taxi on Monday.

“We believe we’ve obtained the taxi involved in the accident,” Traffic and Highway Patrol inspector Phil Brooks told AAP.

Insp Brooks said detectives were also working to reconstruct the incident with the help of video footage.

“There are CCTV cameras around the place and we’re hoping we’ll get that sort of picture,” he added.
