The 2015 Oscars: “Whitest” in 17 years
Ten seconds into his opening monologue, host of the Academy Awards (“Oscars”) Ceremony Neil Patrick Harris called attention to a major shortcoming of the evening’s agenda. “Tonight,” he said, “we honor Hollywood’s best and whitest – excuse me, brightest”….
The zinger brought laughs while pointing out the lack of diversity in the four acting categories – best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. Since every nominee in each of those categories was white, the 2015 Academy Awards (Oscars) have been called the “whitest” in 17 years. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Academy) has a membership that is overwhelmingly white. Of the 6,038 Academy’s voters, 93% are white and 76% are male.
Although no minority actors or actresses were nominated for acting awards there was diversity elsewhere. There were minority performers, minorities onstage presenting awards, and the cameras often focused on minority actors in the audience. Rev. Al Sharpton noted that “the presentation of minorities onstage does not bear resemblance to the nominees and therefore the winners. One has to wonder whether or not the academy was trying to compensate with optics for what they didn’t do with operations.”
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, a black woman who is president of the Academy, has advocated for more diversity. It seems the white Hollywood elite is comfortable with non-white actors and actresses playing slaves, maids, drug addicts, musicians, athletes, crazy African kings, or pirates. However, the film industry is coming under increased pressure to leave that comfort zone and change its racist and sexist hierarchies.
Some critics maintain the larger issue isn’t the Oscars but a film industry that is not reflective of American society. Rev. Sharpton said in one of his speeches that Hollywood needs to reflect the culture.
No minority nominees in acting categories
The lack of diversity of nominees in coveted Academy Awards categories may reflect an ominous trend throughout the nation, resulting from recent court decisions that soften or strike down affirmative action laws.
