Federal Employment Minister Bill Shorten says there are reasons why a report on Labor MP Craig Thomson may not be able to be publicly released.

Fair Work Australia has indicated it may not release the findings of its three-year investigation of Labor MP Craig Thomson, prompting an Opposition claim of a cover-up.

Mr Thomson has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Shorten has told Channel Ten it is not up to him to decide if it is released.

He argues the regulator may be prevented from making it public.

“Whether or not it gets made public is influenced by a number of factors which are the preserve of the regulator,” he said.

“For instance, if it turns out that the report has findings which then need to trigger an investigation by the DPP, releasing it publicly may prejudice any subsequent investigation.

“So I don’t think its quite as black and white as your question would suggest.”
