‘Threats as useless as sanctions on Iran’

“That is unacceptable and according to all rules must be stopped. Nobody can win concessions from the Iranian side with a policy of threats, no more than with a policy of sanctions,” said Sergei Ryabkov in an interview with Interfax on Tuesday.

The Russian official also warned that “the Middle East standoff could boil over into military action at any moment” calling for urgent talks between Iran and the P5+1 – including the US, the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany.

Iran and the P5+1 are scheduled to meet on April 13-14 to find a diplomatic way of ending the existing standoff over Iran’s nuclear energy program, though the venue of talks has not been finalized yet.

Ryabkov slammed the West’s military buildup in the Persian Gulf region, underlining the need to find a diplomatic solution over Iran’s nuclear energy issue.

“The pot can explode if the diplomatic valve is not opened,” Ryabkov warned.

“The situation is so acute that any incidents are possible. This is especially dangerous when big military, naval capabilities are concentrated in the area,” he added.

The Russian official further stated that the risk of an accidental conflict breaking out cannot be ignored.

“We find the situation very serious and tending to aggravate. All foot-dragging must stop…. We should consistently follow the road of restoring confidence between the sides and de-escalating the situation,” he said.

Ryabkov added that some Israeli officials were among the “hotheads” that seem overly eager to use military force against Iran.

“There are hotheads, some of them in Israel, who apparently have lost all faith in the possibility of an agreement with Iran…. [They think] that the sextet [P5+1] (is not capable) of agreeing with Iran on a generally acceptable foundation [and], therefore they speak of the possible use of force,” he added.

The US and Israel have been escalating their war rhetoric against Iran in recent months, accusing Iran of maintaining a military objective in its nuclear energy program.

However, Tehran refutes their claim as baseless, arguing that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has every right to the peaceful applications of nuclear technology.

Iranian officials have vowed a crushing response to any act of aggression against the country.
