First graders plotted to use silica gel packets to poison and kill classmate.

Three first graders in Alaska planned to kill a classmate with poison. The plot emerged from an ongoing feud with the classmate. The girls acknowledged to officials that they planned the poisoning.

The plan the girls formed was to use silica gel packets from their lunchtime seaweed to poison and kill another girl. Believing the packets to be poison, the girls brought them to school with the intention of putting them in the other first grader’s lunch. The plot was not carried out because two other first grade students overheard about the “poison packets” and reported the plot to school officials.

Silica gel packets are often found in pre-packaged food and medicine bottles to absorb moisture. The gel is not poisonous but is made up of tiny beads which, according to the Carolinas Poison Center, can become lodged in the throat and may produce a choking hazard. Written on the packets are “Do not consume.”

The girls who developed the plot and the students who reported it were interviewed by the School Resource Officer. Administrators and school district psychologist also interviewed the plotters to see if they understood what they were trying to do – whether it was a prank that got out of hand or if they really meant to hurt their classmate. The parents and guardians of the three plotters were also interviewed.

There were no criminal charges. The three girls were suspended and will return to class after their suspension.
