Time is Running Out for GMO Labeling Opponents

Mars, the manufacturer of candies such as M&Ms, recently announced they would include genetically modified organisms (GMO) labeling on their products as a way to appease a growing number of consumers that want to know.

According to the Mellman Group, 89% of Americans are in support of mandatory GMO labeling and 77% agree that something should be done.

This means 9 out of 10 “prefer a printed GMO label on the food package rather than use a smartphone app to scan a bar code.”

This is largely because 80% of customers asked said that these codes allow companies to garner data from their customers via apps. And 17% of those polled use the bar codes to get information on the product, and 16% have ever scanned a QR code.

The candy maker said in a statement they “firmly believe GM ingredients are safe”; however the labeling initiative is designed “in the interest of transparency”, and compliance with Vermont’s new law.

Two years ago, General Mills announced they would respond to public demand and remove GMOs from their products after GMO Inside (GMOI), an environmental coalition brought together tens of thousands of demonstrators to flood the Cheerios Facebook page with comments, calls to the corporate headquarters and massive amounts of emails to the executives with one message: Take GMOs out of their cereals.

On Cheerios’ website, the corporation said : “We don’t use genetically modified ingredients in original Cheerios. Our principal ingredient has always been whole grain oats – and there are no GMO oats. We use a small amount of corn starch in cooking, and just one gram of sugar per serving for taste. But our corn starch comes from non-GMO corn, and we use only non-GMO pure cane sugar.”

Filmmaker Daryl Wein explained in an op-ed piece : “GMOs are found in nearly 80% of processed food in the United States. Currently up to 92% of U.S. corn is genetically engineered, as are 94% of soybeans and 94% of cotton. In short, they are everywhere. As consumers, we feel we have a fundamental right to know when Genetically Modified ingredients are present, so that we can make the choice whether or not we feed them to our families.”

Another aspect fueling the distrust of the public are scandals wherein opponents to GMO labeling are caught working with lobbyists for Big Food , such as the Defense of Brands:

• PepsiCo
• Nestle
• Coca-Cola
• General Mills
• ConAgra
• Campbell Soup
• J.M. Smucker
• Kellogg
• Land O’Lakes

And there are the anti-anti-GMO advocates who say that those who are against GMOs rely on pseudo-science and the belief that “a powerful ideologically motivated group are holding the world to ransom by conspiring to mislead the public and prevent the spread of GM, which according to pro-GMO activists, is denying the poor and hungry of the world access to food.”

However, political and corporate interest keep the worlds poor and hungry in their current state. And evidence shows that if those companies that manufacture GMOs have contributed to that at all, it was through the fact that their products have not alleviated food poverty or stabilized food security as was promised decades ago.

Combine that with hundreds of independent scientists from relevant fields of study coming out to condemn the use of GMOs in a consensus campaign to call for more “credible science” used when determining the safety of GMOs.

The consensus explained how GMO safety was accepted after a mix of cherry-picked quotes and industry-backed studies were conducted which has given lawmakers and the public a false sense of security.
