Too early to judge Slipper, says Windsor

Key independent MP Tony Windsor says he is prepared to consider supporting a no-confidence motion in Speaker Peter Slipper.

But he would need more information before making a final decision.

The opposition wants Prime Minister Julia Gillard to force Mr Slipper to stand down following allegations he sexually harassed a former staffer and misused taxpayer-funded Cabcharge dockets.

Failing government action, the opposition could initiate a no-confidence motion in the Speaker when parliament resumes on May 8 – the same day the federal budget is handed down.

Mr Windsor, who provides Labor with support for its minority government, says he will not pre-judge what might happen in parliament.

“I don’t have a clue what could happen there,” he told AAP on Sunday.

But he would not rule out supporting a vote against the Speaker.

“If there is other information or an argument or logic that the opposition can deliver in the parliament, I am more than happy to listen to it.”

The MP said during the life of the current parliament there had been plenty of talk about no-confidence motions in “someone” but nothing had eventuated.

Mr Windsor said it was a matter for Mr Slipper to decide whether he should step down.

The matter was before a court and everyone had the right to the presumption of innocence and due process, he said.

But if the court were to find against Mr Slipper, the “weight of the law” should be thrown against him.
