Toulouse-Lautrec’s works coming to Aust

Australians will get a rare chance to see classic artworks from Bohemian Paris when a major exhibition of works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec opens at the National Gallery of Australia later this year.

More than 120 paintings, posters and drawings will be a part of a major retrospective of the renowned French artist.

Toulouse-Lautrec’s works, including his famous Moulin Rouge series, will be brought to Australia from 35 separate collections around the world.

His artwork is rare, given that he died in 1901 at the age of just 36.

The gallery’s director Ron Radford said visitors would see Toulouse-Lautrec’s skill as a draftsman and the brilliance of his technical execution.

“The exhibition will examine the artist’s abilities as an acute observer of Parisian life,” Mr Radford told reporters.

“The exhibition will trace Toulouse-Lautrec’s career from his earliest works to his extraordinary depictions of the Paris social scene, dance halls, cafe concerts, brothels and theatres.”

Toulouse Lautrec: Paris and the Moulin Rouge will open on December 14 and will run until April 2013.
