The admission will fuel speculation that Mohamed Merah was a “lone wolf” and a “self-starter” who co-opted the al Qaeda brand to commit the massacre.

The official, who is close to the investigation into the attacks by Merah, 23, said there is no sign he had “trained or been in contact with organised groups or jihadists”.

Merah was killed in a gunfight with police Thursday after a 32-hour standoff. Prosecutors said he filmed himself carrying out three attacks since March 11, killing three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers with close-range shots to the head.

The killings have rocked France, with President Nicolas Sarkozy calling them a “national tragedy”, and temporarily suspended the country’s presidential campaign.

  1. the guy was armed with an UZI and stayed in Tel Aviv, for a jihadist that would be like a circumcised gestapo soldier.
