The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has Jeh Johnson, secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) asking Congress to authorize overtime pay for officers because this is the only way to shorten lines at airport checkpoints.

Johnson would like funds that are currently in an account to be shifted to another so that TSA officers can get paid overtime and possibly boost their staff members.

The DHS secretary explained that because of the anticipated “surge in summer travel” the TSA needs to “expand the work hours of screening officers in peak periods at high volume airports.”

Peter Neffenger administrator for the TSA, predicted that if his agency did not get the funding they want, “wait times [would] double from last year” and the ability for his officer to “scrutinizing travelers and their carry-on bags more thoroughly” will be extended unless Congress does something about this.

Neffenger threatened an 8% increase in wait times for passengers unless the TSA is able to utilize features such as “bomb-sniffing dogs”; as well as push for passengers to use the PreCheck screening system.

In 2014, the TSA boasted about 25 million travelers having signed-up for PreCheck and inadvertently having given over “biographic information” such as:

• Personal name
• Date of birth
• Home address
• Fingerprints
• Proof of citizenship
• Immigration documentation
• Payment information for verification

In 2016, there were 2.36 million travelers signed up to PreCheck. The TSA hopes that they can “recruit millions more”.

The PreCheck system does not preclude TSA officers preforming a pat-down of passengers airport to ensure security is not breached; regardless of whether or not the passenger has paid the bribe money to avoid pat-downs at checkpoints.
