A man has shot another man dead and seriously injured a woman before turning the gun on himself at a home in Tasmania’s north.

Tasmanian police said the two men died in an apparent murder-suicide in the front yard of a house in Watkinson Street, Devonport, about 7.45am (AEDT) on Saturday.

Detective-Inspector Rob Gunton said both men were dead when police arrived and the woman had gunshot wounds to her chest.

She was taken to Burnie hospital in a critical condition.

Det-Insp Gunton said another woman and a girl, believed to be about seven years-old, were inside the house at the time of the shooting, but were not harmed.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the deceased males was the offender and he’s taken his own life after shooting the male and female outside the residence,” Det-Insp Gunton told AAP.

He said the man believed to be responsible for the shooting was in his early 40s, but no ages were available for the male and female victims.

He said it was too early in the investigation to say what had sparked the dispute that led to the shooting.

“Investigations are under way and that will become clearer probably tomorrow,” Det-Insp Gunton said.

He could not say if the people involved in the incident were related.
