Two now charged over setting woman alight

Police say a teenager who allegedly set a woman on fire in Sydney’s inner city was recruited by an older man.

The 33-year-old Korean national was walking to work on Chippen Lane, in Chippendale, at 9.45pm (AEST) on March 22 when she was doused with accelerant and set on fire.

Staff from a nearby brothel put the flames out and the woman was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

She suffered severe burns during the attack and still requires daily treatment.

On Wednesday, a 17-year-old youth handed himself in at Redfern police station on Wednesday and was charged with attempted murder.

The teenager, from Cartwright in Sydney’s west, was refused bail and appeared at Bidura Children’s Court in Glebe on Thursday.

Police arrested a 40-year-old man at Coffs Harbour, on the state’s north coast around 9.30am (AEST) on Thursday.

The man, from Quakers Hill in Sydney, was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and recruiting a child to carry out a criminal act.
