UK Labour Party to Boycott G4S over Cooperation with Israeli Prisons

nsnbc : The Labour Party in the United Kingdom decided at its national executive meeting on Tuesday to boycott the G4S security company. G4S is providing equipment to Israeli prisoners in which Israel holds Palestinian prisoners without trial, holds political prisoners and subjects prisoners to torture.

The decision at the Labour party’s national executive meeting reflects a response to several years of pro-Palestinian protests during the meeting and the revival of Labour after the election of Jeremy Corbyn and the huge influx of new, especially younger members to the party.

Besides providing equipment to Israeli prisons, G4S also provides equipment Israel uses at checkpoints in the occupied Palestinian territories and at the border to the Palestinian Gaza Strip. G4S security guards are also employed at a number of Israeli military bases.

The company has come under increased international pressure due to the growing international Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) campaign.

In 2014 the Gates Foundation divested the whole of its 70 million USD holding in the company as a result of an international campaign. The universities in Oslo and Bergen, Norway, refused to give G4S contracts over the company’s role in Israel’s prison industry. In the UK at least five student unions voted in favor of canceling contracts with G4S and successfully lobbied two universities not to renew contracts with the company. Major cities in The Netherlands and South Africa canceled contracts with G4S. The Methodist Church in the United States divested from G4S after it debated the company at a national convent.

G4S, for its part, announced in 2014 that it does not expect to renew its contract with Israeli prisons when the current contract expires in 2017.  Responding to the growing international pressure, G4S also announced that it would end some aspects of its involvement in illegal Israeli settlements. The international pressure against G4S has caused its stock prices to fall and shed a bad light on a company that is already under much criticism over the handling of its contracts with UK prisons. The Labour party’s decision is consistent with a growing consensus to respond to companies that are involved in illegal Israeli activities in occupied Palestinian territories.
