Guardian – Revenue & Customs officials have forced taxpayers to pay out tens of millions of pounds to use poorly-staffed advice lines while claiming to hit efficiency targets, the government’s independent auditors have discovered. The National Audit Office will disclose on Tuesday that 20m telephone calls for advice or to leave required information were not picked up at all last year, leaving people frustrated and helpless.
