UN seeks Iran aid on Syria peace plan

Robert Mood said Thursday that Iran’s viewpoint on the peaceful settlement of the Syrian issue was in harmony with that of the mission of Kofi Annan, the joint UN and Arab League envoy to Syria.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Syria Mohammad-Reza Raouf Sheibani.

The Iranian envoy for his part called for stability in Syria, reiterating that security in Syria and the region were intertwined.

Sheibani referred to Annan’s earlier visit to Tehran for talks with Iranian officials and stressed Iran’s support for the UN-Arab League envoy’s plan in Syria.

Annan proposed a six-point plan to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the resolution of the turmoil in Syria.

The plan calls for the establishment of a cease-fire between the government and the opposition, allowing the humanitarian groups to have access to the population, releasing detainees and starting a political dialogue.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Thursday that the Syrian government must be given enough time to implement the peace plan.

Salehi stated that countries around the globe, particularly the regional ones, must help advance Annan’s plan or the region would face a serious problem.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in support of President Assad’s government.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
