US election 2012: what can stop Mitt Romney now?

Santorum may have the social values to appeal in South Carolina but lacks
money and organisation. Perry may not have bothered to campaign in New
Hampshire but will struggle to be taken seriously after finishing with one
per cent.

The only thing that can stop Romney now is Romney. Another mistake such as the
comment that he likes firing people could further unravel the thread that he
unpicked with his blunder on Monday.

But that was his first major mistake and he has been running hard for more
than a year. His campaign is disciplined and focused on an economic message
that is well suited to this election cycle. And as he showed in his
acceptance speech in Manchester, he can now deliver a good line. When he
said “the president has run out of ideas, now he’s running out of excuses”,
it was the first good Romney sound bite I can remember, having seen him on
dozens of occasions.

He is a much more confident candidate than four years ago. Not perfect by any
means, but ready to tackle a vulnerable president in November.
