Quoting the Japan Coast Guard, Japanese public broadcaster NHK said that the military jet crashed on Sunday some 1000 kilometers northeast of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido.
Meanwhile, updates on the story indicate that the plane’s pilot has been rescued. The pilot, the only passenger on the jet, reportedly ejected from the aircraft before the crash.
The aircraft reportedly took off from the US Misawa Air Base in Aomori and was on its way to North America. It crashed at 11:30 am Japan time.
US officials have not yet made any statements offering more details regarding the situation. The cause of the accident also remains unknown.
The US has more than 100 active military bases in Japan.
