US Marines on Darwin adventure

“They said they like us here, they like the Marines, there is a lot of tradition and we are happy to be here,” he said.

The US is re-establishing its presence in the Asia-Pacific with the first US troops to be stationed in Australia since World War II.

They will be conducting exercises with Australian soldiers at military training areas Mt Bundy and Kangaroo Flats, south of Darwin, as well as Bradshaw, southwest of Katherine.

The Marines will build their numbers over the next five to six years.

Eventually, it will be a complete Marine Air Ground Task Force which will include command, ground, aviation and logistic elements, as well as artillery, light armoured vehicles and aircraft.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith said the Marines would assist in humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions in the Pacific region.

“These are unambiguously good things for Australia and the United States to be doing,” he told the Marines at the military ceremony.

But critics of the US troop build-up remain cautious.

Justin Tutty, from the Basewatch group in Darwin, said that at a meeting last week, Australian Major General Michael Krause had dismissed concerns US troops would bring nuclear weapons or cluster munitions into Australia.

“All the concerns we have outlined as still present, none of them have been formally resolved,” Mr Tutty said.
