US police to use arms against protesters

“Chicago’s police department has ordered as of two month ago at least 8,500 police face masks or face shields and as you mentioned to have acquired Long-Range Acoustic Devices,” Rick Rozoff, Manager of Stop NATO in Chicago, said.

“Reports of this sort are meant to intimidate or scare people away from protests. They will not have their desired effect,” he added.

Controversial Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), which emits ear-piercing noise to paralyze or disperse crowds, is among the arms that the US police planned to use against the demonstrations.

Chicago police said it would serve “as a means to ensure a consistent message be delivered to large crowds that can be heard over ambient noise.”

The LRAD, however, can also emit a “deterrent tone,” which some have said is capable of causing permanent hearing damage.

In 2009, the device was used at a protest at the G20 Pittsburgh summit in the US.

There are ongoing complaints that its use in Pittsburgh caused some people to suffer permanent damage.

The NATO summit is scheduled for May 20 and 21.

Tens of thousands of anti-war demonstrators are expected to gather in Chicago to protest at the summit.
