US protesters want end to Afghan war

“The [US] war [in Afghanistan] endangers all of us, but especially the people of Afghanistan. It’s a crime against the whole population,” author and activist Sara Flounders said.

Tensions have intensified after the recent desecration of the Holy Qur’an and the massacre of 16 unarmed civilians by US forces.

The recent killings have even moved some two dozen US senators and nearly 90 members of the House of Representatives to call for a speedy withdrawal from the country.

Meanwhile, recent opinion polls indicate that the majority of Americans oppose the war in Afghanistan.

The rally comes after US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta voiced hopes of signing a strategic pact with Afghanistan, allowing the US a stay beyond 2014 in Afghanistan.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched in 2001 under the pretext of removing the Taliban from power; however, insecurity has been growing across the country, despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led forces there.
