Va. man to be sentenced for aiding terrorists

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — An electrician from northern Virginia who admitted producing an online propaganda video for a Pakistani terrorist organization will be learning his fate.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled Friday for 24-year-old Jubair Ahmad of Woodbridge. He pleaded guilty to providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistani organization that was blamed for the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people.

Prosecutors at federal court in Alexandria are seeking the maximum term of 15 years. They say that in addition to producing the propaganda video, Ahmad also received military training from Lashkar and professed a wish to die as a martyr.

Ahmad’s lawyers are asking for only a two-year term. They say he did not appreciate the criminality of helping Lashkar, a group that has widespread support in his native country.
