VFF to hold basin plan meetings

AS the Murray Darling Basin Authority prepares for its first public meetings about the basin draft plan lobby groups are going into overdrive.

Victorian Farmers Federation president Andrew Broad said the plan to slash water from agriculture went against Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing the basin produced $4.4 billion worth of produce each year.

That equates to nearly 40 per cent of Australia’s irrigated production, he said.

“The value of agricultural production from just one megalitre of water in Victoria is $2700 a megalitre, far exceeding the basin wide average of $1230 a megalitre,” Mr Broad said.

“For every gigalitre of water available to Victorian farmers, there is the potential to produce $2.7 million worth of food for Australians. Despite this, the Murray Darling Basin Authority has recommended slashing water from agricultural production by 971GL in the Southern Basin.

“There are ways to help rivers without undermining food production and decimating rural communities. We need a balanced approach.”

National Irrigators’ Council chief executive Tom Chesson said the draft basin plan was a job destroyer and called for Prime Minister Julia Gillard to reject the plan and ask for a new draft.

“To put it simply if we don’t grow the food or fibre, the food manufacturing sector, which is the country’s largest, will have nothing to process and jobs will disappear,” he said.

He also called for the Prime Minister to visit basin towns.

“Irrigation communities provide real jobs and we say ‘yes to jobs, to growth, to fairness’ but if the current draft basin plan is adopted many of our communities have no future,” Mr Chesson said.

The VFF will hold a member meeting in Shepparton tomorrow at The Connection, Peter Ross-Edwards Causeway between 1pm and 3.30pm. Another meeting will be held at Mildura’s Settlers Club on Thursday between 4pm-6pm.

The Murray Darling Basin Authority starts its public meeting consultations this week.
