Vic government dumps carbon target

Victoria’s climate change and environment policies are under review after the Baillieu government decided to dump the state’s 20 per cent greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.

State Environment Minister Ryan Smith said keeping the target would cost Victoria $2.2 billion.

An independent review has reportedly found no compelling case to maintain the higher target, with the state expected to back the federal government’s target to cut emissions by five per cent over the next decade.

“It’s a national responsibility,” Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith won’t release the report until Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Smith said he could not commit to any of the state’s environment and climate change policies and they would be confirmed after talks with state and federal environment ministers in May.

The former state Labor government introduced the legislation to cut emissions 20 per cent below 2000 levels by 2020 after the failure of the Rudd government’s carbon trading scheme to pass federal parliament.

Under the Gillard government, a national five per cent emissions reduction target was set to be achieved through the carbon tax.

“We will be working in concert with the federal government to see what programs that we currently have in place are appropriate to maintain,” Mr Smith told reporters on Tuesday.
