Vic man jailed for 10 years over crash

A speeding drunk driver who killed a 16-year-old girl after crashing a stolen car, despite repeated pleas from his passengers to slow down, has been jailed for 10 years and three months.

Timothy Watson, 24, pleaded guilty to culpable driving over the crash that killed Ebony Dunsworth at Nar Nar Goon in October last year.

He also pleaded guilty to theft of the car he was driving and causing serious injury to two other passengers.

Victorian County Court Judge Frank Gucciardo on Friday sentenced Watson, who had prior convictions for driving and alcohol-related offences, to a minimum seven years’ jail.

He said Watson, who repeatedly ignored the pleas of Ebony and other passengers to slow down, caused unspeakable pain by disregarding the lives of his passengers and other road users.

“Ebony Dunsworth didn’t die in an accident, but as the direct consequence of your disregard of the law and her personal safety,” Judge Gucciardo said.

Ebony died at the scene of the crash, with her body found underneath the car, after being picked up from a party on October 31.

A conservative estimate of the speed Watson was doing when he crashed into a roundabout was 137km/h.

Watson began driving erratically and aggressively after an argument with another passenger about a girl, the court was told.

In the moments before she died, Ebony sent her best friend, Amelia Campbell, a text message: “Lol I’m gonna die”, before calling Ms Campbell to tell her that she was with some guys who had been drinking and driving at 100km/h in a 40km/h zone.

Outside court, Ms Campbell said Ebony was a popular girl, loved by everyone, whose death would hopefully send a message to young drivers.

“My worst nightmare now after this accident is that somebody else has to go through what we have all been through,” she said.

“I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

“I just want people, drivers, to think, is it worth it spending seven years in jail? Is it worth taking somebody’s best friend, sister, daughter, away from this world for one night of fun and drinking?”

Ebony’s mother and stepfather, Helen and Craig Crichton, said they hoped young people would learn that alcohol was not necessary to have fun.

Mr Crichton told reporters that while justice had been served, the sentence wouldn’t change the fact they had lost a “wonderful, special girl”.
