Vic train derailment affects commuters

A derailed train has affected thousands of Melbourne commuters.

A work train carrying bluestone rocks derailed at Windsor, in Melbourne’s east, about 11.40pm (AEST) on Sunday, putting the busy Sandringham line out of action for the Monday morning peak hour.

Thousands of commuters have been forced to take replacement buses from Elsternwick to South Yarra on Monday.

Metro trains spokesman Daniel Hoare said the derailed train was restored to the tracks about 5.10am and had now moved on. However, the Sandringham line was not expected to be back in operation until at least mid-morning.

It is not known what caused the derailment.
