Up to 50 peace and anti-war activists gathered outside Shannon Airport on Sunday March 11th to mark the ninth anniversary of the airport’s involvement in the illegal invasion of Iraq. They called on the Irish government to end the ongoing use of Shannon by the US military, and to investigate years of rendition flights through the airport. The peaceful demonstrators were accompanied by almost as many Gardai and airport police, and barriers were erected to block entry to the airport during the peaceful event.

In 2003 the Irish government allowed Shannon to be used as a base by the US military, despite a clear message from the Irish people that they did not want that to happen. The current Irish government continues the same unacceptable policy by allowing 600 armed troops a day to pass through Shannon on their way to and from Afghanistan. Furthermore, by supporting sanctions against Iran and closing the Irish embassy there, this government seems intent on supporting the same terrible mistakes that led to millions of deaths in Iraq.

It was truly appalling that a supposedly neutral country like Ireland supported the invasion and occupation of Iraq nine years ago. It is even more appalling that the Labour Party ministers who opposed the invasion of Iraq back then are now presiding over Shannon Airport’s use as a hub for US military occupation forces.

US peace activist and mother of Casey Sheehan who flew through Shannon to his impending death in 2004 sent a message of support to Sunday’s demonstration at Shannon. The message which was read out by Jim Roche of the Irish Anti War movement said “It is regrettable that years after it has been proven without a doubt that the US War of Terror was based on lies for profit, that the Republic of Ireland is still allowing US troop transports and other war planes to land at Shannon Airport”.

“The state of much of the global economy is being sent into a tailspin because of US imperial overreach, and it’s long past time creative, peaceful and healthy alternatives to this war economy that enriches few and kills and impoverishes many, are developed and implemented.”

At the end of the demonstration a number of attempts were made to engage constructively with the Garda officer in charge. However he refused to talk to anyone — even former UN Assistant Secretary-General Denis Halliday!

Sundays demonstration was attended by members and supporters of the locally based Shannonwatch. It was also supported by the Peace and Neutrality Alliance (PANA), Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW), the Irish Anti-War Movement and other groups and individuals from around the country. A large number of Quakers from around the country also attended. The Quakers have been regular supporters of the monthly demonstrations held at Shannon, in keeping with their peace testimony which says “All bloody principles and practices we do utterly deny, with all outward wars, and strife, and fighting with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretence whatsoever”.

Further demonstrations will be held at Shannon on the second Sunday of every month from 2 to 3pm — until such time as the US military stop their illegal and unwarranted use of our civilian airport.
