Violence claims six lives in NW Pakistan

Three children and two women of a family were killed and another injured when a mortar shell hit a vehicle in Shalobar area of Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency on Friday, officials and local sources said.

The slain family was fleeing the region after Pakistani security forces ordered the residents of the volatile region to evacuate parts of Bara Tehsil due to the intensification of militancy.

The vehicle was also destroyed in the incident, the officials said.

Elsewhere, unknown militants gunned down local leader of Awami National Partyu (ANP) in Hashtnagar area of Peshawar, main city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province on the same day.

Over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
