Virgin cancels 12 flights after fault with Sydney airport check-in system

Virgin Airlines says it is working hard to get customers on rescheduled flights after problems at Sydney Airport last night forced the cancellation of more than a dozen flights.

For two hours, Virgin’s check-in system was not working, which meant none of its domestic flights departing from Sydney were able to leave.

The fault has created a backlog for today with 12 flights cancelled since this morning.

“Unfortunately, as a result there may be some delays to flights this morning and some cancellations as we accommodate customers affected last night and reposition aircraft which were delayed,” a Virgin Airlines statement said.

“We are doing our best to ensure all customers reach their destination as soon as possible and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

This morning’s cancelled flights had been due to leave from Brisbane, Coolangatta, Sydney, Rockhampton, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart.

A spokeswoman says customers who were stranded away from their home cities will be compensated for accommodation expenses.

Some disgruntled customers took to social media to share their frustrations at the cancellations and delays.

We had our 6:45am Mel-Syd flight cancelled this morning. We did not get any notification of the cancellation. The website gave conflicting information. When I called customer service they hung up on me and then said the flight wasn’t cancelled. The airport staff did not even apologise. Have now been at the airport for three hours and the wait continues. This is not good enough.
