WB elections commission arrives in Gaza

The delegation arrived in Gaza City on Monday and met with Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and other officials.

The visiting group was led by Hanna Nasser, the CEC head in the West Bank, which is governed by the Fatah movement.

“We have the OK and the blessing of the [Hamas] government to go ahead with our civil registration. So everything is all right and I think… things will work out very well,” said Nasser.

Meanwhile, Hamas Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Awad told reporters on Monday that Haniyeh “gave instructions to facilitate the work of the CEC.”

“There will be constant coordination between us and the [West Bank] commission. We hope its operations will expand to include the holy city of al-Quds (Jerusalem) and we hope to see an end to the division [between Hamas and Fatah.]”

The trip by the West Bank delegation to Gaza comes several days after Azzam al-Ahmed, a senior official from the Fatah movement, said that he had signed an Egyptian-mediated agreement with Moussa Abu Marzouq, the deputy of Hamas Political Bureau chief Khaled Meshaal, in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The two sides agreed to “launch consultations to set up a government of independents” in addition to beginning the work of the electoral commission in Gaza, Ahmed said.

Mukhaimer Abu Seda, a political analyst from Gaza, told Press TV on Monday that the “coming of the Palestinian election commission to the Gaza Strip is a positive step toward ending the political divide between Hamas and Fatah, but that does not mean this is the end of the internal problems between the two rivals.”

“I believe that there will be many obstacles, many problems, in the way.”

The major Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah signed a reconciliation deal on May 4, 2011, which provides for the creation of a joint caretaker Palestinian government.

The creation of such a Palestinian government has been stalled over the past months due to several issues, mainly the position of prime minister.

On February 5, Khaled Meshaal and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas, who also serves as the acting Palestinian Authority chief, discussed the formation of a Palestinian unity government during a meeting in the Qatari capital, Doha.

The two sides announced on February 6 their agreement to a Qatari proposal that recommends Abbas as the prime minister of the future unity government.
