Wilkie pushes for foreign aid increase

Sacrificing an increase in foreign aid to produce a budget surplus would cost lives overseas, key cross-bencher Andrew Wilkie says.

The Labor government promised to raise foreign aid from 0.35 per cent to 0.5 per cent of gross domestic product.

Speculation is mounting that Treasurer Wayne Swan will delay increasing the aid budget because government revenue is tight.

Mr Wilkie will join World Vision, GetUp, the Oaktree Foundation and other aid organisations at a campaign launch in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon, calling on Mr Swan to honour Labor’s commitment.

“That increase from 0.35 per cent to 0.5 per cent may not sound like much,” Mr Wilkie said,

“But World Vision’s economists estimate the difference could save up to 800,000 lives if spent on health.”

He said saving money at home should not cost lives overseas.

GetUp National Director Simon Sheikh said foreign aid cures diseases and helps stabilise Australia’s neighbours.

Oaktree Foundation CEO Tom O’Connor said Australia’s aid contribution is relatively low by international standards.

“We can do better and this planned increase is an important first step,” he said.
