Williams taunted by dog calls before death

Slain underworld killer Carl Williams was taunted by his fellow inmates who howled at him like dogs on the night before he was murdered, according to reports.

Williams complained about the abuse to his lawyer in a phone call just minutes before he was bashed to death with an iron bar by prisoner Matthew Johnson in April 2010, the Herald Sun reports.

The howling was directed at Williams after it became public knowledge that the gangland killer was co-operating with police by giving them details of crimes perpetrated in Melbourne’s underworld.

A source told the Herald Sun he had received a call from an inmate inside the same unit as Williams at Barwon Prison on the night before his death.

“The boys were howling ‘Dog, dog, dog’,” the source was quoted as saying.

“I got the call that night, the night before his death, saying ‘Oh, there’s trouble in here tonight’.

“The next day I found out he was dead.”

Williams’ lawyer, Rob Stary, confirmed Williams had mentioned the dog calls in their final conversation.

“I can confirm he did complain of the dog calls and the howling,” he said.

“There’s no doubt he knew the significance of that. He knew what it meant and he was concerned about it.”
