‘Sexual predator’: Joseph Moran was today found guilty of raping law student

A ‘sexual predator’ is facing years behind bars after being found guilty today of raping a law student who was ‘turfed off’ the last bus home because she was 20p short of the £5 fare.

Joseph Moran attacked his 22-year-old victim as she was left stranded in a city centre at 3am because a bus driver refused to wait a few moments for her to use a nearby cash machine.

Shocking CCTV footage showed the student pleading with the driver for eight minutes before he eventually turned her away.

Speaking after the verdict, the officer in charge of the case questioned why other passengers who boarded the bus while she begged to be allowed on failed to lend her the 20p she needed for the 14-mile journey home.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Griffin, of Notts Police, said: ‘It is tempting to start to attribute blame, and one might try to blame the driver of the bus.

‘But had she got on the bus, I think he would have attacked someone else. The only person to blame is Joseph Moran.

‘It is difficult to speak for the other passengers on the bus and they made a judgement that night. Knowing what they know now, they may have given her that 20 pence.’

The student was finally forced to call her mother and ask her to pick her up.

Nottingham Crown Court heard she began walking in the direction her mother would be approaching from to spare her from having to negotiate the city’s one-way system.

But after walking for less than a mile, she was targeted by Moran, who dragged her into a park and launched a ‘savage’ attack which was ‘almost devoid of any mercy’.

The 19-year-old then panicked when he spotted a passing police patrol, approaching it and claiming he had come across the injured, semi-naked woman while walking through the park.

It was a lie Moran, who denied rape, persisted with throughout his trial. But he was found guilty of the charge, and one of wounding with intent, by a jury following four hours of deliberations.

Judge James Sampson adjourned sentencing until July 27 – but told Moran an indeterminate sentence for the protection of the public was a ‘realistic possibilty’.

He added: ‘Whatever the nature of the sentence, it will be a lengthy one indeed. This was an extremely grave crime.’

Judge Sampson added that Moran’s victim was ‘courageous and bright young woman’.

Following the verdicts, jurors were told she had returned to her law course and would be taking her final exams in the summer.

It was also revealed Moran had previous convictions for burglary and causing actual bodily harm to a female family friend, for which he had received an 18-month community rehabilitation order in 2009.

The court heard he had punched, slapped and headbutted the woman before he was restrained by relatives and the police.

Moran’s latest offence took place in December last year.

Michael Auty, prosecuting, said his victim had been out celebrating the end of her graduate diploma in law exams when she boarded the last bus home.

He told the court: ‘The fare was £5. She had only £4.80. The bus driver would not waive the 20p.

‘She asked him if he could wait while she got some money from a nearby cash machine. He refused that request too.

‘She was effectively turfed off the bus and left stranded in Nottingham city centre at 3am in the morning.’

Nottingham Crown Court heard the victim started walking to meet her mother – but was grabbed by the neck and dragged in to Nottingham’s Forest Recreation Ground where she was beaten and raped.

Her ‘substantial’ injuries included black eyes, a badly swollen face and bruises to her body, breasts and neck.

Mr Auty told the jury that ‘in the cruellest of circumstances’ her mother had pulled up on a stretch of the road where she expected her daughter to be walking, and just yards from where she had been attacked.

She called her daughter’s mobile phone twice and on both occasions could hear a ‘grunting’ before the line went dead.

Police in a passing patrol car then stopped to ask if she was all right. She explained she was looking for her daughter.

Within minutes, Moran, of Sneinton, Nottingham, appeared, ran to the police car and banged on the roof.

He told the officers: ‘You had better come quick. I think a girl has been raped or something’.

He claimed mud and the victim’s blood were transferred to his body and clothes when he tried to help her to her feet.

Moran’s victim was found nearby sat with her knees pulled tight to her chin. She was naked from the waist down, and her injuries were so severe that her mother didn’t recognise her at first.

Mr Auty said Moran, who was two-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit and had traces of cannabis and cocaine inside his body, had ‘panicked’ when he spotted the police car and tried to make out her was ‘her saviour, her knight in shining armour.’

In a video interview the student recorded with police officers after her ordeal, she described her experience on board the bus, saying: ‘I remember having a gross sense of injustice that he (the driver) wouldn’t let me on.’

She also revealed that she found it ‘really depressing’  that she had not been allowed to travel on the bus.

The victim said her last memory of the night was walking towards home alone. She could recall nothing about the attack and her next memory was waking up in hospital about 8.30am the same day.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Griffin said: ‘The level of violence was so extreme it was shocking.

‘Nottingham will be a safer place by virtue of the fact Moran is in prison, and the females of the city are much safer for it.

‘He is very dangerous and very violent. He is a sexual predator.’

A statement from the victim’s family read: “The last six months have been a very difficult time for my daughter and our family. We would like to thank the police, the prosecuting council and the medical staff at the Queen’s Medical Centre for the care and support they have shown to us during this time.”

The bus driver and passengers have to live with this now.

What’s 20p? I usually pay for the person behind me, either on a bus or in a car park, I like to see them smile…

Whist only the rapist is to blame, i hope the bus driver and the other passengers take a valuable lesson from this tragic crime.

I am actually blown away by the fact that this poor girl wasn’t allowed on for the sake of 20p!? Or the fact that no-one else had the decency to step in and offer it to her? It makes me feel sick that this could easily have been avoided for her if someone had shown a shred of common decency. I truly wish nothing but the best for herself and her mother such a horrific ordeal to overcome. And I sincerely hope the judge sticks to his word and gives this vile man a very long prison sentence , he deserves nothing but the worst.

It would be interesting if some people do an experiment along the lines of this tragic event, to see what type of nation we *actually* are.

I wouldn’t have gotten off the bus then they would have had to call the cops….selfish bus driver

Disgusting. I would have made up the fare and taken the drivers name. If no one else was around then he should have waived the 20p or dropped her off a stop earlier.
Yes the rapist would have found another victim but so many people are in the wrong here. I hope the driver and fellow passengers don’t sleep at night.

This story makes me feel sick to the stomach. I remember being behind a shopper in a queue, clearly not one of life’s privileged with young children who was short of something like 80p. She was deciding what to put back. I gladly gave it to her. Nobody in their right minds would want their female friends or relatives walking home at that time of the night anywhere in Britain now. I hope the driver and the other passengers remember that night for a very long time, just as no doubt she will. I just hope she can learn to live again, as well as she can.

The cop said no one can blame anyone but the guy that did it, and he’s right, as the guy would just have found someone else. HOWEVER, this just shows the state of society these days, and the fact that no one would give 20p to a young girl in the early hours of the morning, who was obviously desperate, is appalling, and we (as human beings) should be ashamed.
I hope this story makes people think twice before they ignore peoples pleas for help in future 🙁

I agree with the police on this one. I certainly WOULD have given the lady 20p as I could not see anyone being turfed off a late night bus. In fact, I have done this before (although not at night) when a young girl boarded my early morning bus (still dark in the winter) and was 15p short. I gave it to her and we now have a chat at the bus stop and I like to think that was my good deed for the day.
What is wrong with people ? I don’t understand. That 20p would have saved her the horrendous ordeal she suffered. They should be ashamed.
