Yemen pres. in Riyadh on first foreign trip

He held a meeting on Monday with the Saudi King to discuss bilateral and regional issues.

The UK-trained field marshal Hadi replaced his predecessor Ali Abdullah Saleh on February 25 following a single-candidate presidential election backed by the United States and Saudi Arabia.

He will serve for an interim two-year period as stipulated by a US-backed power transfer deal which granted Saleh and his closest allies immunity from prosecution for crimes they committed during the deadly crackdown on the revolution which erupted in early 2011.

Since the deposal of Saleh, who ruled Yemen for 33 years, Yemenis have been holding demonstrations demanding his prosecution for the deaths of thousands of protesters.

Demonstrators also demand the dismissal of his family members and officials from his inner circle who still hold high-level security and military posts.
