DRESSED in a pale pink top and with her long blonde hair tied in a plait, Laura Louise Waller looked more like socialite Paris Hilton than a young woman facing a possible sentence of life in prison.

But that is exactly what the pretty 19-year-old is facing if she is found guilty of being an accessory after the fact to murder – a charge stemming from the shooting death of Aaron Dale Macfarlane in Mount Isa on January 3.

Ms Waller, and her fiance Aaron Jon Woodsbey, 27, who is charged with murder, fronted Townsville Magistrates Court this morning.

It has been reported the young couple were shopping for wedding rings when they were arrested in Townsville yesterday.

The court heard that Ms Waller gave a signed statement to police that she and Mr Woodsbey were “absent from Mount Isa” at the time of the murder.

“She said they were east of Cloncurry looking for snakes to catch,” police prosecutor Lescha Palmore said.

Ms Palmore told the court that an associate of Mr Woodsbey allegedly travelled with the couple to remote bushland to dispose of a revolver, a revolver Ms Waller was allegedly seen posing with in photographs.

“Aaron Woodsbey made certain admissions to (the associate),” Ms Palmore said.

It is alleged that Mr Woodsbey showered and burnt clothes in the presence of Ms Waller, with police giving her an opportunity to recant her previous statement.

“She maintained it (the original statement) was true,” the prosecution said.

The prosecution said a search warrant executed on a caravan owned by Mr Woodsbey on Old Mica Creek Road had allegedly turned up two semi-automatic handguns and a quantity of munitions and air gun pellets.

Neither of the defendants were licensed to have possession of the firearms, Ms Palmore said.

A subsequent search warrant turned up a computer hard drive, which was forensically examined, with a series of photographs of the couple in possession of the firearms allegedly located.

Defence lawyer Claire McKinnon objected to some of the photographs being tended to the court but acknowledged her client was a “gun enthusiast”.

“Save it for the trial,” Magistrate Peter Smid said.

The defence made an application for bail for Ms Waller, which was granted after Magistrate Peter Smid determined she was not an international flight risk.

“She had a British passport but lost it,” Ms McKinnon said.

“A condition of her bail could be that she not apply for a new passport.

“She has no ties to Britain anymore … she was also aware that Mr Woodsbey was a suspect and made no attempt to flee.”

The court also heard that Ms Waller had the full support of her mother, stepfather and grandmother who all reside in Mount Isa.

“It is a word on word case and tenuous at best,” Ms McKinnon argued.

Ms Waller was granted bail with strict conditions and her case was adjourned until May 29.

No application for bail was made by Mr Woodsbey, who appeared before the court in a black singlet and jeans, with his murder charge set down for mention on Monday.

Aaron Macfarlane’s widow, Chanara Macfarlane, sat stoicly in the courtroom as the charges and facts of the prosecution case were read out. She left the court in tears but refused to comment.

After the charges were announced yesterday, she reportedly left a touching message to her husband on her Facebook page.

“My beautiful husband,” she wrote. “Send me your courage and strength. I miss you and love you forever.”
