Iran, Italy sign 14 pacts during president Rouhani’s Europe tour

The agreements were signed in a meeting in the Italian capital, Rome, late on Monday with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in attendance.

President Rouhani on Monday departed for Rome on the first leg of his trip to three European destinations.

The pacts are aimed at promoting cooperation between the two nations in various fields, including transportation, railways, education and medicine, trade and commerce, safety, ports, and agriculture.

During the meeting, Rouhani and Renzi also issued a joint political statement to sketch a roadmap for the further expansion of ties between Tehran and Rome.

In Italy, the Iranian President is also planned to meet a number of Italian investors and major industrialists.

Rouhani will then visit the Vatican City and meet with Pope Francis as well as President of the Holy See Giuseppe Bertello.

The Iranian chief executive will then head for the French capital of Paris on Wednesday, January 27.

There, he will meet with his French counterpart Francois Hollande as well as Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.

Meetings with French investors, economic managers, and major industrialists are also on Rouhani’s agenda.

A large delegation of political and economic leaders, including the ministers of oil, transport, industry and health are accompanying the president.

The Iranian president will return to the country on Thursday, January 28.

Rouhani was scheduled to visit the European destinations on November 14, but the trip was cancelled following a spate of deadly terror attacks in Paris.
