A cunning thief posed as a road worker and was directing traffic before attacking and robbing an elderly woman in Melbourne’s south-east yesterday.

Detectives believe the attacker, who was dressed in a high-visibility vest, was waiting for the 72-year-old woman when she left the TAB where she worked on Centre Road, Bentleigh and walked towards the bank to deposit the weekend’s takings.

Detective Senior Constable Andrew Wise said the woman left the back of the shop about 9.30am and walked through the car park when she encountered the man, who had set up road signs and witches hats and was directing traffic with a stop/go sign.

He had also blocked off access to a lane where he made his getaway.

The attacker grabbed the woman by the hair and pulled her to the ground before running away with a “substantial amount” of cash, Senior Constable Wise said.

“It’s quite unusual to be honest with you and I believe this guy has gone to quite a bit of effort to set this up,” he said

“Information to me is that the male has possibly been at the rear of the premises for up to half an hour where he strategically placed road signs and operated a stop/go lollipop directing traffic, effectively just to disguise himself, to perhaps put the victim at ease until he was prepared to attack her for the money.

“He had with him a number of witches hats and a ‘roadwork ahead’ sign which had a couple of orange flags from it that you typically see on a highway … and he was standing there in a reflective vest with a stop/go sign.”

He said the thief, who was about 190 centimetres tall and of Pacific Islander appearance, then ran east along the lane and across Jasper Road.

The East Bentleigh woman suffered cuts and bruises in the attack and was shaken by the ordeal, Senior Constable Wise said.

“She’s stiff and sore and she’s pretty shaken up,” he said.

“Fortunately she’s going to be OK but I can’t see her returning back to work soon.”

Detectives have released an image of the woman’s attacker.

They have appealed for anyone with information about him, or anyone who saw the attack, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
