Youshij house back on National Heritage List

Financial Tribune- The house of Nima Youshij, the late eminent poet, is to return on the National Heritage List following the efforts of heritage authorities, a senior official at Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization said.

“During a meeting held on Jan. 24, heritage officials agreed to inscribe the renowned poet’s house on NHL once again, after the Court of Administrative Justice intervened,” Sepideh Sirousnia, cultural heritage deputy at ICHHTO, was quoted as saying by ISNA.

The renowned poet’s house, located in the northern Tehran district of Tajrish, was inscribed on the National Heritage List in 2001 on his sixth death anniversary.

However, it was removed from the list in Nov. 2017 following a verdict by the Court of Administrative Justice, apparently due to the absence of any legally valid deed showing the house belonged to the literary personality.

Reportedly, the issue provoked an outcry from the heritage community, including the officials of Tehran City Council, compelling Ali Asghar Mounesan, vice president and the head of ICHHTO, to urge heritage deputy at the organization to pursue the case.

Mounesan said in his letter, “It is the clear duty of the organization to clarify the case of Nima’s house, which does have historical and cultural values, making it privileged to retain its national status. The structure must be immune from any sort of impairment.”

However, after discussing the issue with the State Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties, the Persian poet’s ownership of the house was proved and further measures were taken to turn the house back to its national status,” Sirousnia said.

“Now that the return of the house to the National Heritage List is irrevocable, it is time for the Court of Administrative Justice to decide if the mansion should receive a new registration number or retain its previous number,” she added.

Elaborating on the complicated case of Youshij’s house, Mounesan lamented that it is unfair to blame ICHHTO for management shortcomings over heritage sites, for any protective measure requires sufficient fund, which unfortunately has not been provided.

Nima Youshij is considered the father of modern Persian poetry, as he founded the movement recognized as New Poetry in Iran.
