5 killed, 10 hurt in Iraq car bomb blast

The explosion of the booby-trapped car in the town of al-Duluiyah, some 90 km north of Baghdad, took place on Wednesday as a team of police explosive experts were neutralizing a nearby roadside bomb, according to a local police source who spoke to Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

All the victims were civilians who gathered to watch the police operation of defusing the roadside bomb, the source from Salahudin’s operations command said, adding that the blast also damaged several nearby civilian cars, houses and shops.

The Sunni-dominated Salahudin province’s capital city of Tikrit, located some 170 km north of Baghdad, was the hometown of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Bomb attacks are not uncommon in Iraq, where suspected Saudi- and US-backed militants frequently target Iraqi governmental officials and institutions in an attempt to destabilize the government.
