This tiny duck is the Laysan Teal, a critically endangered species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. This is also one of the ducks living on Midway Atoll, part of a project to create bring the species back from the edge of extinction.
According to IUCN, there is a global population estimate of only around 888-1064 individuals, making it the most endangered duck species in the world. While the species once thrived across the entire Hawaiian archipelago, it dwindled to living exclusively on Laysan Island.
That is, until a bright idea was sparked.
