JULIA GILLARD says she was not surprised that Tony Abbott was unable to wish her happy birthday without trying to score a political point.
”Tony Abbott, always playing politics and always inclined to say ‘no’,” she said. ”I suppose we’re going to see that on display on my birthday, as well as every other day.”
Asked about the Prime Minister turning 50 yesterday, the Opposition Leader wished her a happy birthday before adding: ”I’m not sure how many more she’s going to have in The Lodge but I certainly wish her happy birthday for today.”

For Ms Gillard, yesterday was business as usual with only brief time to reflect.
”I think any birthday with a zero at the end of it causes people to take stock and think about their life,” she told reporters.
Last night, she was going to have a quiet dinner with her partner, Tim Mathieson, pictured outside their Melbourne home, who has bought her a pet dog and some jewellery.
