Abbott to promise $10m for indigenous jobs

OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott will flag a $10 million investment in trial programs to overhaul indigenous job services that would link 1000 positions to training.

Mr Abbott will deliver a speech in Melbourne today calling for “more imaginative ways to include Aboriginal people in the mainstream economy”.

He will commit a coalition government to funding four new job centres from existing budget allocations, News Limited reports.

The speech pays homage to the work of mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, who heads up the Generation One campaign to end indigenous disadvantage.

“Andrew Forrest’s great insight is the key to employment is an employer,” he will say.

“Rather than train Aboriginal people for jobs that might not exist or give Aboriginal people training employers might not want, his method is to identify willing employers, earmark suitable jobs and guarantee Aboriginal people ongoing employment provided they do the training and take the job.”

If the method works with indigenous employment it could be rolled out more generally, Mr Abbott will say.
