assistance for cyclone hit NT

THE federal government will provide financial help to repair bridges and roads damaged by Tropical Cyclone Grant and get affected communities back on their feet.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Robert McClelland and Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson announced today that assistance would be provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

NDRRA is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and the states.

Mr Henderson said detailed assessments were continuing in affected areas to establish the full extent of the damage.

The Stuart Highway would reopen at 6pm (CST), he added.

Mr McClelland thanked emergency Service staff and volunteers who worked during the wild Christmas weather which caused widespread damage, including derailing a freight train north of Katherine.

“While most Australians were enjoying their turkey and ham, there were hundreds of emergency personnel who interrupted their time with their own families to protect and assist fellow Australians in difficult situations,” he said in a statement.

Inquiries about assistance can be made on (08) 8999 5059.
