At least seven dead in Oakland, California shooting (PHOTOS)

At least seven people are dead in Oakland, California on Monday after a student at Oikos University allegedly opened fire at around 10:50 a.m. local time.

Authorities in Oakland have apprehended a student at Oikos University that they believe to be the gunman in the massacre that occurred early Monday. According to local network KTVU, the gunman walked into a classroom and opened fire at the college, which teaches medicine to students while emphasizing Christianity ideals.

Shortly after the first reports were made, law enforcement told The Oakland Tribune that as many as eight people were shot early Monday, with two suffering gunshot wounds to the head. The first death toll put the number of casualties at only one, but by 12:45 p.m. local time, five deaths had been confirmed. By 2, the count was at six dead. Shortly before 3, the Associated Press quoted an Oakland Police Department spokeswoman as saying seven had passed away.

After detaining the suspected shooter, the Oakland Police said “No imminent public safety threat appears to exist in immediate area.”

Officer Johnna Watson addressed the media Monday afternoon and said,“I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting,” reports the Associated Press.
