Barnett slams Canberra over GST

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett has slammed the federal government over his state’s share of GST revenues, saying WA has “hit the bottom of the barrel” and must slash services because of the shortfall.

WA faced a reduction of $600 million next year in its GST revenue, an angry Mr Barnett told reporters on Wednesday.

He said his government was going through the budget to cut $600 million out of good programs in education, health, policing, infrastructure and services across the state.

“The people of Western Australia should not have to pay that price.

“Why is it that a Queenslander is worth $2200 according to Julia Gillard but a West Australian is only worth $1200? It is grossly unfair,” Mr Barnett said.

He is advocating a 75 cents in the dollar floor for GST revenues for WA.

The premier said the issue was starting to put major financial strains on the Australian federation and on the growth of the Australian economy.

“Western Australia is carrying this nation and we’re happy to do it, we’ve got good fortune on our side but there is a limit.”

Mr Barnett said he hoped the change of government in Queensland would help WA get better outcomes at the next Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting.
